guidelines

At-Large Magazine is about collecting the vast reams of brilliance that tend to go unnoticed by the myriad of Harper's Bazaar knock-offs out there. We're looking for people who love being frivolous, crass, write their lines with razor-sharp wit and aren't afraid to explore the ugly, awkward and tawdry parts of human nature. Writers we're keen of include Banana Yoshimoto, Aimee Bender, George Saunders, Chuck Palahniuk, Junot Díaz, Bret Easton Ellis, Kim Addonizio, David Sedaris and Louise Glück. Some of us are also fond of Lypsinka (above.)

We're currently accepting submissions for our Teeth Issue. Our reading period ends August 31, 2008; all submissions received thereafter will be considered for our Fame Issue -- submissions can interpret the theme as broadly or specifically as needed.

Fiction/Nonfiction Guidelines Please send all prose in Microsoft Word format. All submissions must be no longer than 1,200 words. Column proposals are also welcomed.

Poetry Guidelines Please send all poetry in a single Microsoft Word document. Each submission should contain no more than 4 poems.

Art Guidelines Send a query letter outlining the specifics of your project and samples of your work. All media is encouraged. Graphic novel proposals are also welcomed.

Right now, we get no money. So if you get published, you get no money. However, you will be published among other luminaries and get a rather sparkly publication credit on your CV.

All submissions should include a brief cover letter that explains your intentions as a prose writer, poet or artist, those of your work and anything else that we should know. If you don't follow these guidelines, no sweat. Publication isn't right for everyone.

All submissions should be sent to atlarge (DOT) editors (AT) gmail (DOT) com. Subject lines should have the format TITLE / AUTHOR / GENRE. Replace capitalized words with their corresponding keyboard counterparts. You're smart enough to do all this. Send all inquiries to that address as well. Oh and send in more than one submission at a time. We're busy people with lives, too.

Lovingly yours,
At-Large Editors
